Studio Artist Interviews: Sebastian Moody

Sebastian is an artist primarily using language to explore how meaning is created and shared. Sebastian’s projects are realised in public spaces and galleries with permanent and temporary outcomes using a wide range of materials. At Outer Space, they're working on a number of public art proposals as well as an ongoing studio-based painting practice.
Tell us a bit about your practice--what do you explore in your practice and why?
My practice is concerned with how meaning is made and shared. I’ve mostly - but not exclusively - done this through the use of language. My work is very much informed by the cerebral end of modernity where language is the go-to stand-in for the immaterial. I believe ideas hold the world together – not things. My work encourages people to evaluate their value systems and consider how they construct meaning.
What do you hope to achieve by making art?
I’ve always thought of artmaking as chasing total freedom. A leap of faith toward the absurd. Art is a big old word that’s been around for a long time. Anyone can grab it, give it a shake and see what they can get out of it.
What are you currently working on at the Outer Space Studio?
The studio is half office, half painting studio. I've just finished a public artwork at Sunnybank. Now I’m working on a few things including new commissions for the Museum of Brisbane and the Crack Up Sisters in Winton, as well as a temporary event for the opening of HOTA on the Gold Coast.
